How to Build a Guest List Without Family Drama

A calm, fair method for deciding who makes the cut, handling plus-ones, and saying no with grace.

The List That Decides Everything

Your guest list quietly controls your budget, your venue options, and the atmosphere of the day. Get it right early and everything else becomes simpler.

Start With Three Tiers

Instead of one long list, build three:

  • Tier A: People whose absence would change the day. Immediate family, closest friends.
  • Tier B: People you'd love to have if space and budget allow.
  • Tier C: Nice-to-haves, colleagues, distant relatives.

Invite Tier A first, then work down as you learn your real numbers.

The Plus-One Rules

Agree one policy and apply it to everyone. Common approaches:

  • Partners of guests who are married, engaged or living together
  • Anyone in a relationship longer than a set period
  • No plus-ones for guests who will already know several people

Consistency is what prevents hurt feelings, not generosity.

Handling Parental Requests

Parents often have their own lists, especially if they're contributing. Give them a fixed number of spaces rather than a veto. "You have twelve seats" is a much easier conversation than debating each name.

Children: Invite All, Some, or None

Whatever you choose, state it clearly on the invitation and be consistent. If you're having a child-free wedding, consider offering a babysitter at the venue.

Expect Around 15% to Decline

Most weddings see between 10% and 20% of invitees decline, more if travel is involved. Don't over-invite on that assumption, but do keep Tier B ready.

Track It Properly

A shared list that both of you can edit, with RSVP status and dietary needs in one place, saves dozens of messages later. This is exactly what Vowy's guest tools are built for.
